Work
I believe that things happen for a reason and it is in this trying time that I want to explore my options. My first degree is in Engineering. Having graduated from NUS in 2005, the opportunities I have to enter the field of study is limited especially for a civil engineer. Nevertheless, I always have this passion to be doing something creative and the internet provides that opportunity. I remember asking myself what exactly I want to do in life. Most people would have found their calling but I am still searching for it. Until now, after going through a full circle from my childhood ambition to be a radio DJ to pursuing engineering and then assisting editors at MediaCorp Publishing as an editor’s assistant during my holidays to having a full-time job at Re* Po* upon graduation. Everything seems predestined. My experience at MediaCorp Publishing was indeed eventful. I get to decide on location, style celebrities, do product shoots, liaise with clients on advertorials, doing page layouts, and meeting tight schedules. I enjoy them all. Instead of asking for a job at MediaCorp Publishing, I decided to join the education sector. At Re* Po* , I have great colleagues who are supportive and helpful. Not to mention the students in the interest group I set up, the Dragon Boat team. Currently, it has sixty members and all enthusiastic about the sport. My role is to ensure that they are well prepared for races and sometimes play the “uncle agony”. Besides getting involved in student activities, my main job is handling media relations and internal communications. Having a small team means doing many spectrums that the job requires. Although we have outsourced our public relations and publications, I have to manage and play a supporting role in facilitating, sourcing for information, ensures that press releases are done and publications are released on schedule. On top of that, I decided to pursue a Master in Mass Communication at NTU in 2007. I have to juggle between work and studies for 32 weeks a year and I have to admit it is most challenging. However, I do enjoy the process because there are so many things I can learn and discover. In the process of discovering, I learn more about my abilities and myself. The time spent is definitely worth it. I want to pursue my interest in entertaining and sharing a part of my life with others. I believe I will eventually.
